But you can look at it through a different prism, where great pop itself can seem eternal. I am not one to ever suggest that pop was better in the past, but certainly comparisons to the naked, plastic commercialism of contemporary boy bands seem invidious when you dive into the mysterious depths of The Walkers Brothers’ most resonant recordings. A double album of their Sixties hits remains one of my most treasured piece of vinyl, although it is probably worth next to nothing, dog eared and scratchy from overplaying. It was given to me by my grandmother, and transported my young mind to a whole other dimension of sound and space. Time doesn’t just fall away when I play it, it stands still. I’m listening to it now.
